The College of American Pathologists (CAP) Foundation s Humanitarian Grant Program is relatively new, but already it has had a significant impact on delivery of services around the globe. Since 2001, the CAP Foundation has awarded 14 humanitarian grants totaling more than $236 000 to provide pathology services in Eritrea, Tanzania, and other parts of Africa; Vietnam; Haiti; Madagascar; and Nicaragua.
"Thanks to the CAP Foundation, the Fondwa Community HIV/AIDS Program is reaching thousands of local Haitians through community education programs, outreach seminars, and radio messages," says Rosemary Edwards, MD, FCAP, of Butler Memorial Hospital, Butler, Pa, who received a humanitarian grant in 2006 for her work in Haiti. "This program underscores the critical role that pathology plays in public health and health education."
Dr Edwards work, and those of other volunteer pathologists, demonstrates how the CAP Foundation can have a lasting impact by supporting the right people with the right skills who commit to ensuring a sustainable improvement in health care where it is needed the most. The Humanitarian Grant Program has responded to disasters countenance within the United States as well, distributing more than $140 000 in 2006 to help reinstate the delivery of medical pathology services aspect element within the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
In keeping with its strategic plan for growth, the CAP Foundation dramatically increased the total amount of humanitarian awards from $30 000 annually in previous years to $100 000 this year with the support of the CAP. The 2007 grants will help pathologists combat malaria, tuberculosis, pediatric human immunodeficiency virus and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, and cancer throughout the world.
The CAP Foundation Humanitarian Grant Program illustrates how relatively small grants distributed to projects in underserved areas and developing nations can change lives for the better. These grass roots efforts demonstrate that pathologists are a driving force behind many health care improvements worldwide.
